Three Safe and Bright Tweetups

By Heather

A wreath is traditional holiday decoration dating back many centuries. We’ve all seen them.

A Tweetup, on the other hand, is a real-life gathering of friends we know from Twitter. While we’re conversing, eating and drinking, we’re also tweeting about it in real time. A Tweetup is just about the most nontraditional kind of party you can have this holiday season.

On Nov. 21, the @safetyathome team threw three simultaneous Tweetups in Chicago, New York and the San Francisco area. We all gathered separately to make holiday wreaths and talk about safe decorating.

Each of the parties had its own visit from Santa Claus (if he can visit every child in one night, why not three tweetups in one afternoon?!), safe wreath decorating kits, parents with children and a little local flavor.

The Berkeley, Calif., #safeandbright party took on a rookie-moms-crafty vibe.

Children decorated their wreaths with UL certified twinkle lights and ribbons plus felt and paper ornaments they made by hand. Parenting and craft bloggers rubbed elbows as we waited for our turns with safety scissors and the cool scrapbook paper. Attendees included @debroby (BlogHer’s craft editor among other talents), @wcopley, @OffTheMeathook, @AskLadyBrain, @fubini and (true rookie mom) Jennifer with baby Zola. Erin Nelson captured the memories with pictures.

Meanwhile in Chicago, the #safeandbright wreath-making party was in a Whole Foods market.

The Chicago #safeandbright event took place at the Lincoln Park Whole Foods in the culinary studio. While @brandie185, @misslori, @ahenand2chicks and @kimmoldofsky and their families worked away on decorating wreaths with UL certified lights, ornaments and ribbon, Santa stopped by. Santa gave the “thumbs up” to everyone’s wreaths as they tested their lights and @secretagentmama captured the whole event with her camera. The event was quite the buzz, as it was it a fish bowl-type room. Store visitors stopped by to see what the hubbub was about and we guided them to the SafetyAtHome.com site. The day was a success and kicked off the holiday spirit!

Miss Lori and Kim used whrrl.com to tell their story in pictures. Brandie also summed up her first Tweetup experience on her blog.

And back in New York, Santa was in a skyscraper and checking his cell phone.

The New York #safeandbright Tweetup kicked off with a surprise visitor from the North Pole!  After taking some family shots with Santa, the wreath decorating started! @nycitymama, @selfishmom, @jenrab and @laughmom showed off their holiday spirit by decorating holiday wreaths with UL certified lights, ribbons and ornaments. Santa even participated in the wreath making while being fed a whole lot of cookies and milk. The event wrapped up with some #safeandbright tips from the @safetyathome site about how to keep homes safe and bright for the holidays.

  1. I have a post mentioning this event schedule to go live tomorrow. Kudos to PR pro Trish Taylor in Chicago who thoughtfully provided a light-up menorah for my little crew to embellish. http://tinyurl.com/yhmf49o

Thanks UL for providing a fun afternoon in a fabulous setting. I don’t know how Santa made it to these other events because I’m sure the Chicago event had the real deal.
